Ohio University students win Air Force ROTC scholarships

The U.S. Air Force ROTC awarded six Ohio University students scholarships through its You Can Fly program, which provides opportunities for cadets interested in obtaining their pilot's license to attend ground and flight training. Students selected to take part in the program are: Jasson Aguilera, of Ironton , Ohio, a sophomore studying aviation; Galen Cooper, of Ann Arbor, Mich., a first-year studying aviation; Charlie Eagle, of Liberty Township, Ohio, a sophomore studying mechanical engineering; Jacob Grimes, of Cameron, N.C., a junior studying engineering technology management; Johan Mendez, of Columbus, Ohio, a first-year studying aviation; and Brady Taylor, of Point Pleasant, W.Va., a junior studying aviation management.

Todd and Teresa Calamita Scholarship

Kelsey Kuczynski, a senior from Cleveland, Ohio majoring in Marketing, Business Analytics, and Business Pre-Law, was recently selected as the second-ever recipient of the Todd and Teresa Calamita Leadership Scholarship at Ohio University. The award was given as a result of her academic performance and campus involvement. Outside Emerging Leaders, Kelsey is a part of Learning Communities, Alpha Kappa Psi, and the Center for Consumer Research and Analytics.

Senior journalism major Alyssa Gormley knows what she wants: to work in an advertising agency and do public relations, just like she did over the summer at the Marcus Thomas agency in Cleveland. With that goal in mind, Gormley has built a portfolio packed with leadership roles, many centering on the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and culminating in her current position as the executive vice president of chapter development on the national board.

Epsilon Pi Tau Warner Award for Undergraduate Student Research

Reed Mechley, BSETM '21, recently graduated from Ohio University, but he did not graduate without making his mark on undergraduate research. After working in Dr. Yuqiu You's lab, Mechley was able to collaborate on a research project which culminated in his win of the Epsilon Pi Tau Warner Award for Undergraduate Student Research in 2021.

More than 1,900 students graduated with bachelor's, master's or doctorate degrees from Ohio University for summer semester 2021. More than 145 students qualified for the summer semester 2021 Dean's List at Ohio University, including main and regional campuses. Students from about 12 states were represented on the Dean's List, including: California, Michigan, New Jersey, West Virginia and Ohio. OHIO students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average for the semester with at least 15 hours earned, 12 of which were taken for letter grades, to achieve this distinction.

2021 Julie Galvan Outstanding Graduate in Journalism Award

The Society of Professional Journalists has awarded Ashton Nichols with the 2021 Julie Galvan Outstanding Graduate in Journalism Award. Nichols is a Fall 2020 graduate of Ohio University and currently a storyteller and communications coordinator at Cariloop. The award, announced Aug. 9, honors a journalism graduate nominated by the student's campus chapter and selected by the Society's leaders based on character, service to the community, scholarship, proficiency in practical journalism and significant contributions to the student's SPJ chapter.

Native American Journalists Association's (NAJA) $10,000 Facebook Journalism Project Scholarship

A graduate student studying journalism has been selected for the Native American Journalists Association's (NAJA) $10,000 Facebook Journalism Project Scholarship. Sarah Liese, a second-year master's student in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, applied for the scholarship by explaining her journalism background, why she wanted to be a NAJA fellow and what Indigenous stories she wanted to tell.

PCAOB Scholar

The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) has recently announced that Ohio University graduate student Ryan Biller has been named a PCAOB Scholar for the 2021-22 academic year. Biller, from Heath, Ohio, is in the full-time Master of Accountancy program (MAcc) at Ohio University and also graduated from OHIO in Spring 2021 with a BBA in finance and accounting.

Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence award

A rising senior in Ohio University E.W. Scripps School of Journalism received a Mark of Excellence award for a story he wrote about video game accessibility. Joseph Stanichar, from Cincinnati, Ohio, wrote the piece titled "Why Many Disabled Players Call 'The Last of Us Part II' The Most Accessible Videogame Yet" for Paste Magazine in 2020. It received the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence award in Video Game Reporting. The awards were announced in June.

In-College Scholarships

Ohio University's Air Force ROTC Detachment 650 announced the awarding of In-College Scholarships to two cadets who are pursuing degrees in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology. Jasson Aguilera, a sophomore from Ironton, Ohio, is an aviation major. Brady Taylor, a junior from Gallipolis, Ohio, is an aviation flight and aviation management double major.

Goldwater Scholar

Ohio University student Emma Rice, an upcoming senior and physics major in the Honors Tutorial College from Marysville, Ohio, was recently named a 2021 Goldwater Scholar for her physics research. During the summer of 2020, Rice began a remote internship with the Low Energy Nuclear Structure group at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL). For the past few months, Rice has been living in California and working in person in the lab.

More than 5,200 students qualified for the fall semester 2019 Dean's List at Ohio University, including main and regional campuses. In addition, more than 2,300 students graduated with bachelor's, master's or doctorate degrees from the University. The graduates represented many areas of the United States and an abundance of countries, including: Great Britain, China, South Africa, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Mexico, Ghana, Vietnam and Bahamas. Students on the Dean's List came from an array of states, as more than 40 states were represented, including: Utah, Maryland, California, New Jersey, Kentucky, Iowa, Washington and Ohio, as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. OHIO students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average for the semester with a schedule of classes totaling at least 15 hours, 12 of which were taken for letter grades, to achieve this distinction.

2021 Fulbright Scholars

Six Ohio University students, five alumni and a professor have been selected as recipients for the Fulbright Program, through which they will work to promote international, educational, and cultural exchange in host countries across South America, Europe, Africa, and North America. The scholars include students Ryanne Morr, Hannah Posedel and Claire Ramsey and alumni Abby Hearne, Sue Ryu, Andrew Steinke and Dakota Tackett, who were selected for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program; students Rhea Lanier, Maya Meade, Kennedy Rasberry and alum Nile Harris, who were selected for Fulbright Canada's post-COVID-19 Challenge; and professor of political science Myra Waterbury, who will spend four months in Budapest at the Minority Studies Institute at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
